For decades scholars assumed the sequence had been destroyed. Instead it sat, misfiled, in a box of correspondence in a university archive — a dozen poems in Helena Cruz’s unmistakable hand.

Now published as part of The Undated Hours, the poems complicate the tidy arc critics had drawn through her career.

A different late style

The rediscovered work is darker and more formally restless than the poems that made her famous, suggesting a writer still changing when the record had declared her settled.

"We were reading a career with a chapter missing," one scholar said. "It changes the whole book."
